Aerodynamics is extremely important. Particularly in a class where motorcycles have the same CBR engines, it becomes paramount. Bearing this in mind, we have avoided to follow the current aesthetic trends (sharp surfaces, ultra compact rear cowls, marked divisions between the different bodywork pieces etc.), as they help little. For the 599BL, we have pursued the principle "form follows function".
Additionally, in the area of aerodynamics, we have to find the best possible compromise and decide if we want better straight line performance or on the contrary, if we want to improve the ability to turn easily into corners (and from side to side), thereby reducing the negative effects of the crosswind in the motorcycle handling.
For the 599BL, we have chosen a slippery and slightly bigger fairing than are currently used, in order to improve not only the straight line performance but also the driver’s comfort in terms of getting protection from the wind. When addressing the driver (from an aerodynamics point of view), it is beneficial to place him as low as possible (lower front section) and with the back flat and horizontal. However, this brings other problems like the smaller motorcycle lean angles an a position that is not to every driver’s taste (legs too flexed) that is why we haven’t push too hard in this direction.
